Overview
The Hui Cui 6‑Sided Black Sandalwood Gaohu is an excellent choice for players looking for a gaohu that feels familiar in-hand, plays comfortably, and blends beautifully in an ensemble setting.
Unlike many traditional gaohus that are round or octagonal, this model features a distinct hexagonal (6‑sided) soundbox, similar to the structure and handling of an erhu. This makes it especially approachable for erhu players transitioning into gaohu, while still maintaining the crisp clarity needed for orchestral performance.
Crafted from Black Sandalwood, it offers a refined, smooth character that is musical and easy to control.
Tone & Sound
This gaohu has a clean, smooth, and pleasant tone, with an emphasis on balance rather than harsh projection:
Very balanced inner & outer strings
Clear high registers without sounding sharp
Even response across low and high positions
Controlled sound that blends well with Erhu and Zhonghu
This makes it ideal for players who want a gaohu tone that integrates naturally into orchestra and ensemble settings.

Important Note (SG Honest Advice)
This model is intentionally not overbearing and is designed to blend.
So:
If you prefer a gaohu tone that is very traditional and cutting, this might feel “too erhu-like”
If you need the gaohu to cut through the orchestra, this may not project as aggressively as some sharper models
However, for many orchestra players, this is exactly the advantage — it sounds refined and unified.
