About the Maker

Song Xiaohui is a luthier with twenty years of deep experience in traditional Chinese instrument making. Song Xiaohui's path as a maker began with rigorous training in an instrument factory. In 2004 he started his entrepreneurial journey, building a solid foundation in wood knowledge and craftsmanship through erhu making. In 2010, he shifted his focus to pipa making, studying under veteran luthier Gao Decai to systematically refine his skills. He later established a 6-mu (approximately 4,000 sqm) workshop in Suxian, Hebei, where traditional handcraft is presented at scale and to consistent standards — ensuring stable, reliable quality in every handmade pipa.

About the Supervisor

Zhang Shuang is a renowned Chinese pipa virtuoso, a pioneer of “new folk music,” and the former captain and lead pipa performer of Twelve Girls Band, one of China’s first modern folk music ensembles to gain international recognition. Beginning her pipa training at the age of six and later studying under celebrated pipa master Wu Junsheng at the Central Conservatory of Music, Zhang became known for her innovative approach to traditional Chinese music. By blending classical Chinese melodies with Western musical elements such as jazz and contemporary instrumentation, she helped create a fresh and globally accessible style of folk music. Through her performances, teaching, and development of electronic versions of traditional instruments, Zhang has played a significant role in modernising Chinese folk music and promoting it to audiences around the world.
